Fielmann opens new head office in Hamburg – a place designed for modern collaboration

Fielmann has opened its new head office in Hamburg – a space built for modern collaboration and innovation.

On 15,000 m², a flexible and inspiring work environment has been created for 1,200 employees.

With the move to Barmbek-Nord, Fielmann is making a strong statement for the future – and for the city of Hamburg.

On September 1, 2025, the Fielmann Group officially moved into its new head office at Fuhlsbuettler Strasse 399 in Hamburg’s Barmbek-Nord district. Around 1,200 employees now work across 15,000 square meters in an environment designed entirely for modern working methods, collaboration, and cross-functional teamwork.

After nearly 40 years at the previous location in Weidestrasse, the move marks a clear commitment to the city of Hamburg and reflects the company’s cultural transformation. The new head office is part of Fielmann’s Vision 2025, which has seen the company evolve from a German market leader with a traditional retail model into one of the world’s top players in optics and hearing acoustics.

A workplace built for people and ideas
Spread across two buildings with four and six floors respectively, the 15,000 m² office space was redesigned over 22 months to create a completely new working environment based on desk-sharing and activity-based working. Employees choose the space that best suits their task – whether it’s a desk in their home zone, a quiet “Office for a Day,” a creative Think Tank, a project room, or a coworking area.

The open space concept promotes flexibility and teamwork. Joint Spaces offer room for informal meetings and breaks, while the “Social Heart” forms the vibrant center of the head office – a place for gathering, eating, and connecting. For moments of quiet, there’s a dedicated “Room of Silence,” and an on-site parent-child office provides support when childcare is unexpectedly unavailable.

In total, the new head office includes seven large conference rooms, 44 meeting rooms, 33 Think Tanks, and 16 project rooms – all equipped with modern media technology to support hybrid working. Fielmann and the works council have agreed on an average monthly office presence of 40% of contracted working hours.

Sustainability at the core
Sustainability played a key role in the selection and renovation of the property. The building is DGNB Gold certified by the German Sustainable Building Council. The facade was renewed and upgraded for energy efficiency, the rooftops are green and support biodiversity, and the overall office footprint was reduced from 33,000 m² to 15,000 m² – reflecting the shift toward hybrid work.

Digital tools replace paper files, enabling fast access to information from anywhere and supporting a paper-light organization. The site also offers 80 bicycle parking spaces, 18 EV charging stations, and excellent public transport connections – all contributing to climate-friendly mobility.

Design inspired by nature and product
The interior design draws inspiration from the surrounding environment and Fielmann’s product world. Wall colors reflect the terracotta of nearby brick buildings, the green of trees, and the blue of the sky. Rounded shapes throughout the building echo the form of an iris or a glass blank used in lens production.

Fielmann’s identity is visible everywhere – from the oversized glasses on the bridge between the two buildings to the employee eye portraits on the walls, reminiscent of the “Your Glasses: Fielmann” campaign. Conference rooms are named after iconic eyewear styles like Panto and Cateye. The latest collection is on display, and visitors can even try on glasses virtually.

A special highlight is the “Fielmann Experience” – an interactive exhibition space where guests can explore the important senses of hearing and seeing. In the 180 m² showroom, visitors learn about the company’s history and experience what it’s like to lose hearing or vision. They can also have their iris photographed and download the image via QR code.

A team effort with strong participation
The move to the new head office is a prime example of Fielmann’s evolving corporate culture. An interdisciplinary project team of around 30 members successfully planned and completed the transformation in just 22 months – a remarkable achievement driven by the right mindset.

Employee involvement was key to the project’s success. From surveys and workshops to webinars, Q&A sessions, site visits, and internal communications, the process was transparent and inclusive. Around 50 ambassadors continue to serve as a bridge between the project team and departments, ensuring ongoing dialogue and engagement.

Conclusion: The new head office is more than just a building – it is an expression of a modern corporate culture built on trust, collaboration, and sustainability. A place where the future of work at Fielmann is already being lived today.
